Natural gas flaring worldwide amounted to a total of 138.5 billion cubic meters in 2022, roughly the amount needed to power Sub-Saharan Africa. Gas flaring, also known as a flare stack, refers to the natural gas that is burned from devices installed in industrial facilities such as chemical plants, petroleum refineries, and natural gas processing plants in order to prevent the over-pressuring of plant equipment.
