Sources of past-due medical debt among adults in the U.S. in 2022
As of June 2022, approximately 28 percent of adults who had past-due medical debt owed this debt to a hospital, while a further 45.1 percent had outstanding medical debt with both a hospital and a doctor/dentist. Individuals in the latter category may have incurred medical debt on separate trips to a hospital and a non-hospital provider, or during the same hospital visit (i.e., the patient received separate invoices from the hospital and a physician).
