Global methane emissions from operational coal mines 2023, by country
China's proposed coal mines are expected to release almost 690 MtCO₂e per year.
Operational coal mines in China produce around 3.9 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) per year, when considering their impact over a 20-year timeframe. This represents more than 75 percent of the methane emissions from active coal mines worldwide.
