Targets for battery mineral recovery in the EU 2027-2031
The new EU Regulatory Framework for Batteries aims to set a more sustainable supply chain for batteries, including material recovery rates for battery minerals. The proposed legislation requires 90 percent of cobalt, copper, lead, and nickel, as well as 50 percent of lithium to be recovered from batteries by 2027. These figures rise to 95 percent and 80 percent, respectively, by 2031. The new EU Regulatory Framework for Batteries was first proposed in 2020 and replaces the EU Batteries Directive of 2006.
