In 2022, the majority of startups in Germany were founded by someone with German citizenship. The second highest share of startup founders were those with foreign citizenship. This survey shows the citizenship of those who founded a startup in Germany in 2022.

Supplementary notes

The data comes from the German Startup Monitor (DSM) for which high-quality data sets are collected annually from founders and managing directors of start-ups. The founders or managing directors (members of the executive board e.g. chief level) of startups received a special questionnaire link by email which was sent through selected DSM network partners. In 2022, 1,976 complete data sets were collected for the survey between May 9 and June 26, 2022.

The source does not provide any information regarding missing percentage points to 100 percent.
