Impact of COVID-19 on projected GDP growth in North Africa 2019-2022

The coronavirus (COVID-19) impacted the economy in North Africa. A study conducted in December 2020 showed that the growth of the North African real gross domestic product (GDP) was estimated at minus 1.1 percent in 2020. This was in contrast with previous projections made by the same source in July 2020, which expected a contraction by 2.3 percent in 2020. Nevertheless, the slowdown remained significant, although other regions on the continent experienced significantly sharper declines. Moreover, the regional economy was projected to recover considerably in 2021 and 2022, with a growth of four percent and six percent, respectively.
