Since 2010, the building construction industry in the United Kingdom has been growing in terms of turnover generated, with figures amounting to nearly 119 billion euros in 2016. Roughly 97,000 enterprises were registered as companies within the building construction sector in 2018, of which 2,780 had an annual revenue exceeding five million British pounds.
Regarding the number of local authority housing projects, there were 1,960 new dwellings completed in England in 2017/18, which was the joint largest number in the last eight years. By comparison, in Scotland this figure amounted to 81, while there had been no recorded ventures in the three years prior. That same year, spending on public housing development came to 6.9 billion British pounds, with an additional 3.2 billion British pounds spent on community development. This was the highest expenditure in the past six years.
When it comes to the building of public facilities, unsurprisingly, London was the most expensive area. For example, construction costs for building a university would total 3,320 British pounds per square meter of internal area.
In terms of output value, construction for new public universities has stayed relatively constant over the years, apart from a noticeable decline recorded in 2012. Similarly, figures for public health buildings have also been fluctuating, with 2 billion British pounds invested in 2017.
