The commercial cleaning services industry in the United States maintained a large market share in 2022 and has continued to employ a significant portion of the American population. In 2022, there were over three million people working in the cleaning services industry in the United States. Janitors and cleaners (not including maids and housekeeping cleaners) made up the largest share of employees in this industry and earned a mean annual income of approximately 34,000 U.S. dollars. Janitors and cleaners are primarily employed within the services to buildings and dwellings industry and in elementary and secondary schools. In 2022, the market size of the janitorial services industry in the United States was almost 90 billion U.S. dollars.

Outsourcing or in-house?

Across North America, the provision of janitorial and cleaning services predominantly occurs in-house. In a 2023 survey of facility managers, approximately 25 percent of respondents stated that they outsource cleaning and maintenance, compared to almost half of respondents who stated that outsourcing is simply not an option. It was most common for organizations who require facility management to employ less than ten full-time equivalent employees in their cleaning/maintenance department. In total, roughly 60 percent of relevant organizations employed less than 50 full-time equivalent employees for cleaning and maintenance and approximately 70 percent had 20 or less facilities maintained.

Leading providers

Of the outsourced cleaning service providers in the United States, the largest company in terms of franchised establishments was Jan-Pro. In 2021, the Georgia-based company reported that they franchised over 10,000 cleaning establishments in the United States. In terms of system-wide sales, Jani-King has remained an industry leader, and generated almost 860 million U.S. dollars in 2021. Founded by a university student in Oklahoma in 1969, Jani-King had roughly 5,300 establishments franchised in 2021.
