U.S. Coupon Market Trends - Statistics & Facts

The coupon, which originated in the nineteenth century and has grown ever since, is a marketing strategy traditionally applied by CPG brands in order to provide consumers with a discount or rebate on various products. The concept, which is now ubiquitous, has become so common that approximately 90 percent of consumers in the United States admitted to having used coupons before.

The rise of digital coupons

What was once found in magazines and mailed to potential customers’ doorsteps, is now commonly found, looked for, and used online. Digital coupons, also typically called promo codes or discount codes, can be found in many places, one example being dedicated discount websites. In June of 2021, the single most popular coupons and rebates website was slickdeals.net, as the website accounted for roughly a fifth of all coupon site visits that month. In addition to dedicated websites, coupon codes are also frequently provided on social media platforms, from Facebook and Instagram to Reddit and even LinkedIn.

Bargain hunting habits in the United States

When asked how they discovered coupons, nearly half of U.S. shoppers said they either searched for them online or received them through emails they got from brands they follow. About a fifth of survey respondents said they came across vouchers through brands’ social media posts or through specialized browser extensions. A considerable share of shoppers also made use of mobile applications for the purpose of bargain hunting. In 2021, for instance, some 40 percent of surveyed grocery shoppers in the U.S. said they liked to receive promotions and coupons for groceries and food through apps on their phone. That said, not everyone feels the same way, as the adoption of coupon and savings apps was more standard among young generations than older consumers.
