In the same period, 161 cinemas were operating in Gyeonggi, while 98 cinemas were operating in Seoul. Almost all cinemas in South Korea are multiplex theaters operated by one of three cinema chains. Around half of the South Korean box revenue are made in cinemas that are owned and operated by CGV, which is a subsidiary of the CJ Corporation, followed by Lotte Cinema and Megabox. Only around three percent of the box office revenue is made in cinemas are not owned by one of those three companies.

After the huge success of the box office with both domestic films and foreign films in the previous year, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) slowed ticket sales immensely in 2020. In 2023, box office revenue in South Korea was well on the way to recovery and approaching pre-pandemic levels, rising to around 1.3 trillion South Korean won. As of December 2023, "Extreme Job" was the highest-grossing domestic movie, overtaking "Avatar", the highest-grossing foreign movie in the country.
