Foster care in the U.S. - number of children exiting 2021, by reasons for discharge
In the United States, most children who exited foster care, about half, exited due to reunification with their parents or primary caregivers. In 2021, about 100,004 children exited foster care in this manner. A further 53,546 children exited the foster care system through adoption.
