Annual growth rate swine inventory Philippines 2018-2020, by type of farm
Pork consumption
The Philippines is a meat consuming nation, where pork was the most devoured, among others. The country’s per capita consumption of this meat was over 14 kilograms since 2007, and its total domestic consumption volume has always been more than one million metric tons over the years. Because of this, the country has seen a rising demand for swine meat.
Pork imports
As of January 2020, the Philippines imported more than 300 thousand metric tons of swine or pork meat. As the growth in number of hogs was slowing down since 2017, the country imported more swine meat to meet domestic demand, resulting in an increasing average farmgate price. This stood at over 100 Philippine pesos per kilogram since 2016.
