Zero trust is a security model based on three principles. The first one is “Never trust, always verify,” meaning that the model is designed to prevent breaches by eliminating the implicit trust within a system’s architecture or network, requiring validation at every access point. A zero trust approach goes beyond acknowledging that cyberthreats exist inside and outside the network, leading to the second principle - “Assume a breach is inevitable.” Finally, the strategy is constructed based on the “Least-privileged access” principle, limiting users from having unnecessary access across the company network. In 2023, implementing a zero trust model consituted a priority for a large majority of companies. By 2032, the global zero trust market is expected to be worth nearly 133 billion U.S. dollars, up from around 32 billion U.S. dollars in 2023.Deployment and implementation: the zero trust journey
It is fair to state that zero trust should be viewed as a journey, not as a destination. In 2024, most companies had already started implementing a formal zero trust strategy or were partnering with multiple security providers to build a roadmap to do so, driven by the need to enable secure remote access for their employees, and modernize their cybersecurity infrastructure. In terms of which technology was most critical to a zero trust strategy, Security Service Edge (SSE) platforms ranked first in 2024, followed by identity providers. SSE is the security aspect of secure access service edge (SASE), a cloud-native IT model that combines wide area network edge networking and security services in a way that is better suited, compared to traditional network architectures, to modern business operations. Properly implemented, a zero trust architecture reduces costs due to fewer data breaches, minimizes compliance violations, and most importantly, offers better control over a company cloud environment, some crucial advantages in an ever-digitalized environment characterized by an ever-increasing number of cyberattacks.
