Event industry in the Netherlands - statistics & facts

The event industry encompasses a wide range of business and leisure activities, ranging from concerts and festivals to sporting events, film screenings, or trade shows. After being hit hard by the onset of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, this industry showed strong signs of recovery in 2022, with revenue in the global live event market estimated to reach nearly 75 billion U.S. dollars. According to Statista Market Insights, also the event market’s revenue in the Netherlands, based on admissions to cinemas, music, and sports events, bounced back in 2022, amounting to roughly 680 million U.S. dollars but remaining below the peak from 2019. On the other hand, the event market’s average revenue per user (ARPU) in the Netherlands has increased gradually over the past five years, with the ARPU of music events being around four times higher than that of cinema tickets in 2022.

How many people attend festivals and music events in the Netherlands?

In 2022, the number of festivals in the Netherlands, including music, visual arts, and theater events, grew sharply compared to the first two years of the health crisis, peaking at approximately 1,200, a seven percent increase from 2019. As the number of events recovered from the impact of the pandemic, so did the festival attendance in the Netherlands, surpassing 28 million that year. When focusing on the live music industry, figures by the Association of Dutch Music Venues and Festivals (VNPF) reveal that the number of visits to music events in the Netherlands also rose sharply in 2022. That said, attendance at events organized by music venues in the country did not catch up yet with pre-pandemic levels, reaching 4.8 million that year.

What are the leading event brands in the Netherlands?

According to Statista’s Consumer Insights Global survey, buying event tickets was among the most common types of service online bookings in the Netherlands, with almost a quarter of respondents reporting doing so as of June 2023. When breaking down the event ticket online bookings by brand in the country, Ticketmaster emerged as the most popular, ahead of Eventim and Mojo. That said, Ticketmaster ranked third in terms of leading event brands in the Netherlands based on the market share, behind TicketSwap and Eventbrite, which together accounted for more than 70 percent of revenue in 2022.
